Why My Personal Trainer Got the Axe



I have been a member of my gym for quite some time.

I’ve had 4 trainers.

They all had different methods, able to meet me where I was, and took my workout to the next level.

I’m not happy about losing any them.

The first one quit the company after a year, the second would be late or absent (and y’all know I don’t play that) so I had to end that.  The third one got a job offer and left the gym.

The last one was a girl and her game was tight. But I had to give her the axe. The sad part is she didn’t do anything wrong…she was just a casualty of war.  Let me explain.

About a year ago, my gym started a new system which created three levels of trainers.  When I bought my membership two years ago there was only one level, which is now the bottom level.  I had to keep this in mind when picking new trainers because it meant that I would need to upgrade my membership if I picked someone at the 2nd or 3rd level.

So my girl got a promotion and jumped straight to the third level.  She’s that good.

I was really happy for her and didn’t want to lose her but there were four issues:

  • The gym where she is really an inconvenience to drive to so I try to schedule my training and spin class at the same time.  It’s really difficult and I need more flexibility.
  • It wasn’t guaranteed that my trainer would stay at the gym.  Like I said, she is my 4th and the first three are no longer with the company.  I would be really ticked if I upgraded and she left.
  • I really wasn’t trying to upgrade my membership.  I would have to pay an extra $5 per session and I was already paying a grip. And keeping it real, why should I have to pay extra because my trainer received a promotion? I mean really, we were guinea pigs to help get them there.  We should be grandfathered. And I told the manager that when I cancelled.  Just the principle of the matter.
  • For sometime there has been a tinge in my gut (actually two trainers ago) to stop.  It didn’t make any sense to cancel, however when I ignore my gut I usually regret it.

So I took all those factors in mind and went with my gut.

I really felt bad axing my girl, but it was a business decision.  Enough of being accommodating– it always gets me the short end of the stick.

I also was a bit on edge about canceling my contract. The personal training kept me accountable and I didn’t want to take the chance of falling off the wagon.  I’ve come too far.

Books, Blogs and Cable TV

Now what?

After doing all this training, I have absorbed some of the methods of the madness. So, I will go it alone.

Over the last few weeks, I have been researching online, browsing through books and watching the exercise section on cable.  Through this, I’ve learned a lot of terminology and information about gym equipment.  Like what’s the difference between a burpee and squat thrusts?  Why use free weights instead of resistance machines? What workouts can I do at home, especially on all these snow days I’m having?  How do I put together my own program with the proper reps, weight and supersets?

I am amazed at what I am learning.  Before I pretty much did what the trainer told me to and asked a few questions so I could try to do some of the workouts on my own. I now have a set of tools and a strategy on hand to achieve my goals.

I really don’t know how this is going to turn out, but I am the eternal optimist.

I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, but honestly most of the time I don’t.  I’ll just figure it out.  I have good sense, know how to google and definitely know how to ask questions.

It’s now time to see how much motivation I really have and how bad I really want this.

I can lose some weight and build muscle on my own, but if I want a Regina King body I need to enlist some help with that. When the summer comes and I did this right, one of my treats will be to get a new trainer–but at their own gym.  Hopefully my girl will start her own thing and I’ll be one of her first clients.
